YPRES
Situated in the Belgian province of West Flanders,
some seven miles from the French border, Ypres is an excellent
base for studying the World War I Battlefields. Four battles were
fought at Ypres, beginning in October 1914. Following the first
battle, British lines in front of Ypres formed a semi-circle, or“Salient”, jutting out into German lines and subjecting the Allies to
fire from the sides as well as the front. In Ypres every evening at
8 pm, a moving “Last Post” is played on the bugle at the Menin
Gate, a custom since 1928.
However, Ypres also offers something for everyone - visit the
medieval city with its ramparts, Cloth Hall, and Belfry - all
restored after the Great War. You may also choose to visit the
unique Theme Park, Bellewaerde.
